BLOG ARCHIVES - PART Six

The almost daily blog started 01 April 2006.

To Part Five (JUNE 2006)

31 July 2006

Last entry for July 2006 and an introduction. Meet my photo number cruncher Ian Macintosh, from Bristol, UK. He tells me that we have over 5,000 Beaver images on the website. We hope to come up with a more exact figure when we tabluate things.

Thanks Ian. What's that page you have on your monitor? It looks familiar ! ;-)

30 July 2006

A couple of willing voluteers have risen to the call. I will be announcing their names once they have signed the 12 page legal document ;-))) They will be rewarded!! It seems that for the first 100 Beavers I have 442 pictures...anyone want to make a guess as to how many are on the website?

Also...I have started something most of you have wanted for a long time. A master Registration/Miltary serial - c/n database. As this has about 4,000 cross reference points, it will take a while. . . but a start has been made.

29 July 2006

Added a couple of pages to new Tech Specs area. If you want I can add to this section?

28 July 2006

Another slew of Kiwi (ZK-) Beavers from Graeme, thanks mate! That will take some time to process and digest. What a delight. Historic images - that's what I like most, that's what we need.

I need a volunteer (with some free time and a fast internet connection) to count the number of Beaver photos on this website ;-) Anyone up to the task? Contact me via the comment form at the bottom of this page. You would need a good working knowlege of the site!

27 July 2006

Today Turbo Beaver N724JR (1679TB47) left West Lake, Ontario on delivery to her new owner. More news on that later.

Danielle is off to Montreal for a few days, so I will try to work away on some new pages for the website. I might add some technical pages, although these details are available elsewhere. I plan on scanning some jewellery items for my other website, so it will not just be Beavers! I turned on my air conditioner today...the first time this year. I feel I have done my bit to help the "grid" but today I need to be cool.

Here is an image from my recent Québec City trip. Noted behind a stored ex Royal B732, were these two Hawker Hunters. J-4006 and XE587 (N587XE). One active Hunter was on the ramp.

24 July 2006

Well, I've added the short video clip for those of you with a fast connection. Give it a whirl and make sure the speakers are cranked up!

23 July 2006

Back at 17:00 EDT safely after 1,400 km trip to Québec City and back. I managed a day out yesterday to watch planes and a make a special visit to see C-GOER (514) operating at Lac-à-la-Tortue. Lots of images to add tomorrow. Thanks to the crew of Aviation Bastican/Aviation Mauricie for making my visit enjoyable. Below, Eric Groleau (26) the happy Beaver driver.

I just noticed that I forgot to add my images of the same aircraft stored for the winter during my last visit on 11 April 2006. I guess I will be very busy with the website tomorrow!

20 July 2006

A short break for yours truly and family, back in the saddle on Monday.

19 July 2006

A brief explanation of "Flight Planned" . . this is a list of aircraft that I will be adding over the next little while. Images that have arrived from contributors. I will already have sent my sincere thanks for the contributions. I often will add other images before when they warrent it...they will get "immediate departure" instructions and jump to the head of the queue!

I had the unexpected pleasure yesterday of a brief visit from retired Army Air Corps AL.1 Beaver driver Chris Sherlock. We just had time for a cold beer and a chat in "Beaver Lodge". He and his wife Karen were on a visit to the US and Canada. They return to the United Kingdom on Friday. Chris brought some 1955 vintage Korean theatre slide scans from Charles Hunt in Washington State.

More images flooding in. you may have notice two "new" Beavers added to the master list. That makes our total about 1,045 represented on the Web Site. My thanks to Erik Lohn, chief pilot for KabeeLo Lodge and thanks again to Graeme Mills webmaster of "Kiwibeavers" for his dedicated work on New Zealand activity, past and present.

I was amazed to actually identify a Beaver from space, Michelle's N1117F (1369) at Ketchikan (with a host of others)...well worth a search on Google Earth ;-)

I'll see if I can add some direct details for you . They have recently updated Ketchikan and Juneau. Here are the co-ords to type in to go see for yourself: 55 20 52.09 N 131 39 18.21 W

16 July 2006

I had been planning to add some pictures of Buchans' Beavers sent to me from Sweden some months ago. By co-incidence Jan-Erik joined the group just the other day!! There is a superb collection of twenty-five "recovery" pictures of CF-GYT taken in June 1959, to add (hence my delay) taken by his Dad. This will be well worth the wait. Here is a sample!! Believe me it is quite the journey.

14 July 2006

Bit of nostalgia for you. CF-TKK (734) Vickers V.952F Vanguard Cargoliner at CYUL/Montreal-Dorval in September 1971. This aircraft was converted to a freighter by Air Canada (fleet number 911) in 1966. It later went to Europe Air Service as F-BTYB. Note smokey company DC-9 on short finals also two other Vanguards at mainenance.

Have vistors arriving today, so many a little short on Beaver updates.

13 July 2006

Mailbox full again today. Excellent images from the former North Rhodesia (Zambia) in 1957. I'm working away on those and will have on the website today. Thanks to Ian Singer for sending his Dad's images taken at Mongu Airport.

11 July 2006

Started work on the 2007 Calendar today. Worked on the cover page. Difficult task as always to select the contents. Only 13 images, but maybe a bonus section to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of our favourite aircaft.

10 July 2006

Busy day for Beaver updates. I've also updated my "credit" page, if your name is not there, and you have an item on DHC-2.COM, please let me know. My sincere thanks to all who have contributed images/info to the web site.

I'm taking today off from most "other" duties.

07 July 2006

Life is a bit quieter today. A couple of Turbo Beavers for a change in pace. Finished the Piper Party Pages..another diversion. Some day I will start a web section on my aviation sightings through the years..remember, I started spotting in 1957 so something to look forward to.

Here are two teasers . . .

05 July 2006

Still pretty busy with other things. Nice series of images from Russell Noble and his ex Edwards AFB U-6A being prepped for the road trip from Colorado to Washington for a one year rebuild at Kenmore. Currently in Montana I believe.

4 July 2006

Just back from a very pleasant early morning walk around the tie-downs at Kingston Airport (CYGK). The Short Wing Piper Club are having a convention in town until the 6th. Some aircraft have gone home already and others are around the area awaiting some cells to pass through. Quite the site to see all those nice wee Pipers! I'll post a few snaps later today and in the days to come.

Here is an immaculate PA-16 Clipper from 1949 N5834H (16-453).

Here are some Piper Party Pages

They are pretty planes. Now if we could only attract that many Beavers!!

02 July 2006

Very tragic news today with the crash of D-FVIP in Hamburg. Sad loss of life, I wish the survivors a safe recovery. Details from Reuters. The pilot also died later that day from his injuries.

01 July 2006

Graeme Mills of Australia has just launched his New Zealand Beaver website. Good-on-yah mate! Here's the link. Graeme has kindly been supplying images to this site for some time.

www.kiwibeavers.com

We just need coax Lenn Bayliss to do one on the Australian Beavers!! Eh Lenn?
