USAF History

52-6088 was made available to the USAF at 6600th Air Depot AMO (Air Material Overseas) unit, Downsview, ON., on 21-Jan-1953, and was accepted on 10-Feb-1953. It was assigned to the Air Defence Command and delivered to Stewart AFB., NY on 24-Feb-1953 where it was initially attached to the 4700th Air Base Group which was responsible for the station support units, before it moved to the 9th Liaison Group on 15-April-1953. It was re allocated to the 4700th between 25-Sep-1953 and 01-Mar-1954 when it passed to McGuire AFB., NJ and the 568th Air Defence Group, It had a brief flirtation with the 1611th Maintenance Squadron, part of the 1611th Air Transport Wing and the Military Transport Command, still at McGuire, between 01-Mar-1954 and 09-Sep-1954. It was then back to the Air Defence Command at McGuire with the 2nd Fighter All Weather Squadron until 18-Aug-1955.

It next moved to Mitchel AFB., Long Island, NY and was allocated to the 26th Air Division (Defence) a component of the Eastern Air Defence Force, but the actual date is unclear. We do know however that it returned to Downsview for maintenance between 04-Feb-1957 and 22-Mar-1957 and then returned to its previous unit at Mitchel AFB., but only for a week as it then moved to Suffolk County AFB., NY and the 52nd Consolidated Maintenance Squadron from 29-Mar-1957 until 09-Sep-1958.

Back to Mitchel and the 26th for two weeks to 24-Sep-1958 and then a return to Suffolk until 21-Nov-1958. Its next allocation was to Byrd Field and a unit with the acronym ADFSX where it stayed until 01-Jan-1960. This unit was component of the Eastern Air Defence Force and then staying at Byrd Field it is shown as passing to the 26th Defence Division and the unit designated as WASX. Its later history is with the 4638th Support Squadron at Byrd Field from 06-May-1960. This was a SAGE unit which later was allocated to Langley AFB., from 06-Mar-1964.

It later served with the 341st Strategic Missile Wing at Malmstrom AFB., MT before being stored at MASDC Davis Monthan AFB., AZ from 26-Aug-1964 until 27-Oct-1964 when it was reportedly transferred to the Department of the Interior. However it is also reported as being at the 48th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at Langley AFB., and was struck off charge from the USAF inventory on 08-Jul-1966 passing to the US Army.
