What's this cone shaped item dangling at the top of the tail?

It's for stringing out a long antenna.

USAF History

52-6105 was made available on 25-Mar-1953 to the 6600th Air Depot AMO (Air Material Overseas Unit) unit of the USAF at Downsview, ON., and accepted on 31-Mar-1953. It was assigned to the Tactical Air Force on 07-Apr-1953 joining the 7th Liaison Squadron at Donaldson AFB., SC. Staying with this unit it deployed to Larson AFB., between 13-Jun-1954 and 24-Jul-1953 before returning to Donaldson and moving over to the 63rd Troop Carrier (Heavy) Wing on 22-May-1954. It returned to Downsview between 09-Jun-1955 and 21-Dec-1955 for maintenance and then returned back to the 63rd where it stayed until 14-Jan-1957.

It travelled all the way to Alaska and to Elmendorf joining the 5039th Air Base Wing for just ten days until 24-Jan-1977 and then went to Tinker AFB., where it was attached to the Oklahoma Air Depot for just five days after which it returned to Elmendorf and the 5039th Air Base Group on 29-Jan-1957. The record card shows it as remaining at this Alaskan base until at least 15-Jun-1958 at which time it was attached to the re designated 5040th Air Base units such as the Maintenance Squadron, the Operations Flight and Consolidated Maintenance Group.

The remainder of this aircraft’s military history after Jun-1958 is still to be researched. It is understood, however, that it was struck off charge from the USAF inventory on 14-Sep-1970 after having been with the 21st Composite Wing at Elmendorf AFB., Anchorage, AK.
