USAF History

51-16540 was made available on 11-Jul-1952 and accepted on 25-Jul-1952 by the 6600th Air Depot AMO (Air Material Overseas Unit), at Downsview, ON., after which it was delivered to the Tactical Air Command at Greenville AFB., SC., and the 4th Liaison Squadron on 03-Aug-1952 where it remained for two days before quickly moving on to the 314th Medium Troop Carrier Wing at Sewart AFB., TN.

This attachment lasted until 08-Sep-1952 when it moved across the base to join the 5th Liaison Squadron on whose inventory it remained until 29-May-1954 when its assignment was “Terminated”. This was following a category 4 (serious damage) accident at Roswell, GA., on 14-Feb-1953 when the pilot Robert J. Mellem bailed out of the aircraft due to weather conditions.
