• NZ6001 RNZAF Trans Antarctic Expedition. Delivered 17-May-1956.

• NZ6010 RNZAF allocated Aug-1959. Used radio call sign ZK-ZTB.

Note: Delivered to the RNZAF as NZ6001, but it was discovered that the serial had already belonged to a Gloster Meteor. The serial was changed to NZ6010 in August 1959. Originally purchased in 1956 for use in the Antarctic, it arrived in New Zealand near the end of July that year. The aircraft was assembled at Hobsonville and flew south arriving at Wigram on the 11-August. It was named “City of Auckland” in December 1956 at a ceremony held at Ardmore, near Auckland. It was then shipped to the Antarctic on HMNZS Endeavour in December 1956, and used there in 1957 and 1958 before-being flown back to New Zealand in a USAF Douglas C-124 Globemaster during October 1958. The aircraft headed south again on board the USS Atka and arrived at Scott Base on the 17 December 1959.

Accident: Beardsmore Glacier, Antarctica. 15 January 1960. Crashed on the Beardsmore Glacier in whiteout conditions. Two crew members were unhurt but not rescued until 20 January by Auster NZ1707. Aircraft written off and not recovered.

Note: Currently a DHC-2, registered ZK-CKH (25) and owned by a New Zealand Warbirds syndicate, is flown in the colours of the original NZ6001.
