USAF History

51-16492 was made available on 02-May-1952 and accepted by the by AMO 6600th Air Depot (Air Material Overseas Unit), at Downsview, ON., on 15-May-1952 and delivered to the Tactical Air Command at Langley AFB., Newfoundland on 22-May-1952. It was attached to the 405th Fighter Bomber wing until 09-Nov-1952 and was designated as a Special Operations Aircraft.

On 09-Nov-1952 it was assigned to the TAC Headquarters Command and the 1100th Air Base Wing at Bolling AFB., Washington, DC.

Apart from two weeks back at Langley with the 405th Fighter Bomber Wing between 01-Jul and 13-Jul-1954 it remained at Bolling at least up to 30-Jul-1962.

At Bolling the aircraft was attached to the 1100th Air Base Group up to 01-Feb-1953 and then the 1100th Maintenance & Supply Unit until 21-Jun-1953. Next it was allocated to the 1100th Flight Operations Group until sometime in 1957 (the record card was damaged at this section) but with the short period at Langley as mentioned above during this time.

Emblem of 1100th Air Base Group

The next confirmed Bolling allocation was back with the 1100th Maintenance & Supply Unit from 30-Jun-1957 through to 01-Jul-1959. Next it was with the 1100th Air Base Group until 29-Apr-1962 after which it was re-designated as the 1061st Air Base Group on 29-Apr-1962 through to 30-Jul-1962.

It possibly remained at this location from this date before moving to Warner Robins AFB with the WRAAR on 09-Aug-1973. It was subsequently photographed still in USAF markings dated as 1978, however this must be in doubt as it is reported as passed th the US Army prior to that date and also reported as being on the Civil register before that date. So we will still need to research this aircraft's history.
