de Havilland Beaver VH-AAJ damaged – upside down. Dismantled and returned to Sydney on Kenworth semi-trailer with pilot David Presnell and Frank Smith. Twelve hour trip. Flew to Armidale with Kelvin Gore in Piper Aztec VH-ETJ.

Note: Has BX wings fitted (Now being made by Avionnerie Valdor ). These allow an increase in Max gross weight increase 6,000lb. Useful load up by 38% to 3,040lb. 140% increase in fuel load to 228 US gal and increased range up 140% to 1,126nm.

The ATSB is investigating a collision with terrain involving a de Havilland DHC-2, registered VH-AWD, 70 km NNE of Hamilton Island, Queensland, on 13 March 2017.

During take-off, the seaplane collided with coral reef resulting in damage to the left float. During removal, the seaplane subsequently sank from water intake. There were no injuries and the aircraft was substantially damaged.

As part of the investigation, the ATSB will interview the pilot and gather additional information.

A report will be released within several months. Report.
