After takeoff, turned left to clear trees on shore, aircraft lost height due to turbulence and subsiding air and pilot dug wing into water; wing hit water 50’ from shore. Substantial damage. V. Dayton and four passengers uninjured.

Accident: Southgate River BC 51.07N/124.22W 10 mi. WSW of Good Hope Mountain, BC. 12-Sep-1971. Flight departed Campbell River at 11:30 PST to take a hunting party to Chilko Lake in marginal weather. When it failed to return a search was initiated on the next day. The burned wreckage was located, crashed on mountain side, by a SAR helicopter at 16:00 PST. It seems that the pilot encountered worsening weather and was attempting to turn back when he hit the side of the mountain. Mark Kenneth Davies and three passengers killed. Aircraft destroyed by fire; remains still at crash site.
